Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) applauds both major parties in the House of Commons for continuing to take a tough stance on Iran following Tuesday’s bipartisan vote.
During Wednesday’s Question Period, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer acknowledged the Liberals for supporting his party’s motion to denounce Iran and to implore Parliament to abandon any plans aimed at restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries. Scheer also pressed the Prime Minister to confirm he will follow through on plans to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity under Canada’s Criminal Code.
In reply, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “We deeply oppose Iran’s support for terrorist organizations, it’s threat towards Israel, it’s ballistic program and its support for the murderous Assad regime. We will always defend human rights and hold Iran to account for its actions.”
“FSWC is pleased to see Canada’s two major parties staying laser focused on Iran in the House of Commons,” said FSWC President and CEO Avi Benlolo. “Its role as a state sponsor of terror and leading abuser of human rights must remain a top concern for our elected officials. We applaud Members of Parliament on both sides for taking a stand and encourage this important debate to continue.”
