Today Tour for Humanity began its last few teaching days of the year at a Catholic elementary school in Barrie. During the day we saw every student in Grades 3-8. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella was impressed with the amount of knowledge the Grades 7 and 8 students had regarding the Holocaust. The classes recently finished reading Elie Wiesel's Night, so they were more than prepared to discuss the topic. Once Daniella transitioned to Canadian history, there was a very interesting question from one student. She wanted to know what made Canada “decide to change its ways and become a good country.” Daniella stated that there really wasn't one clear answer that could be given. She explained that Canada has transitioned to being a multicultural country that allows - and encourages - people from different parts of the world to come here but that at the same time Canada is also not immune to racism and antisemitism. Daniella showed the class the current hate crime statistics and she discussed how these crimes are often seen today.
