Education Report

Today the Tour for Humanity was in Cobourg at an alternative education centre serving teens and adults who are working on their high school diplomas. It was a really great day of small groups coming through for our Global Perspectives on Genocide workshop. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Elena enjoyed working with all of the groups and there was a high level of interest in World War II and the Holocaust. One of the memorable students from the day was a Grade 11 student who had clearly studied this time period. He shared a personal anecdote, telling the group that his foster mom's mother was a member of the Dutch resistance during the war. Elena also made sure to talk about the post-Holocaust era and the importance of the Holocaust in our modern understanding of human rights and the concept of genocide itself. Elena introduced and explained the 10 stages of genocide and talked about manipulation tactics employed by the different groups that have perpetrated genocide. Most of the students hadn't heard of Rwanda or any of the other genocides Elena covered so she tried to help them connect with the events of 1994 by emphasizing the role that Canadian Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire played in bearing witness to the violence.
