Tour for Humanity continued its first week back at a middle school in Brampton today. Grade 7 classes participated in the Canadian Experience workshop. Today’s classes were full of important and meaningful discussions. One class in particular stood out as Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella ventured into a deep discussion about bullying. A few students began sharing their own experiences and it soon became evident that these were common experiences. One student asked what steps they could take to stop the bullying if they had already gone through parents and teachers but the bullying continued. Daniella told the class that one of the first things was to take the power away from the bully. She explained to the class that if they stick up for one another and don’t give the bully the satisfaction of a reply that they would likely be stopping the bully completely. Daniella asked the class to picture a scenario where a bully was making mean jokes about another student. If no one laughed at the mean joke, would that bully continue making the jokes? As Daniella was talking she overheard a group of young boys in the back row comment that “it’s so true. That’s all such a good point and seems easy to do”. We ended that workshop with a reminder of past injustices like the Holocaust and how these students had the power to be heroes and create positive change.
