Today, Tour for Humanity spent the day at a Catholic school in Barrie working with Grades 6-8 students. There were 5 Canadian Experience workshops on the bus. It was a good day with some very meaningful conversations. The school was very welcoming, particularly the principal who met the bus immediately upon arrival. She thanked Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella for coming and even managed to sit in on parts of a workshop. Daniella spoke with the principal at the end of the day and she relayed feedback from both staff and students that everyone loved the bus and the material. Many of the classes had previously studied both the Holocaust and Residential Schools so she heard a lot of students in the halls talking about the programming with comments such as: “Remember when we learned about that in class?” and “It was cool to see all the information again."
One memorable moment occurred during the Grade 6 class. After watching the Heroes video, one boy mentioned Anne Frank and how he had never heard of her before and thought she was really inspiring. Daniella agreed and then told him that he should read her diary, and he was shocked to find out he’d be able to read it. When their classroom teacher told the class a copy of the Diary of Anne Frank was in their school library, he seemed even more surprised. Daniella would imagine that book was checked out of the library this afternoon!
