Today students returned to class after March Break, so naturally Tour for Humanity was back on the road. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella spent the day at a Catholic secondary school in the village of Tottenham, approximately half way between Toronto and Barrie. Daniella mostly worked with Grade 10 history students who participated in the Canadian Experience workshop. Given that it was the first day back Daniella was impressed with the amount of engagement from the students. In the second workshop of the day, Daniella spent a considerable amount of time discussing the story of the S.S. St. Louis, with students offering alternative suggestions for the ship instead of returning to Germany. There was a consensus that the captain should have kept trying to get other countries to allow the Jewish refugees to enter. This allowed Daniella to paint a picture of how grim the reality really was for Jewish refugees because very few countries took in anyone. When she told the class of Canada’s shockingly low statistic of Jewish refugees allowed into this country during the war, the class was stunned. The 4th class of the day was a Grade 12 philosophy class who participated in the Global Perspectives workshop. The material fit in quite nicely with their curriculum as they were beginning to discuss the concept of what people are capable of doing to other people.
