Today, Tour for Humanity was at a Catholic elementary school in Woodbridge. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Elena taught 5 workshops to students in Grades 5-8. Many students were familiar with some details about the Holocaust, and one young man told us that he knew about the Holocaust because his Jewish friend told him about it. He seemed quite proud! The Grades 7 and 8 students participated in the Canadian Experience workshop while the younger groups took part in Simon's Story. Overall it was a very successful day and many teachers thanked Elena for bringing such an amazing experience to their school. There was one very astute boy in the third group of the day. He noticed the Iron Cross medal Hitler was often seen wearing and asked what it meant. Elena explained that he was a soldier during World War I. Another student then asked if Hitler was a good soldier. Elena responded that he was by all accounts and it's important to understand that it was his status as a war hero that allowed him a foot in the door with German politics. He was obsessed with Germany's alleged betrayal because it was also, Hitler felt, a personal betrayal against soldiers who fought valiantly.
