Today, Tour for Humanity had a good day of workshops at a public school in Guelph. There were 6 workshops on the bus of Grades 5-8 students: the Grade 5 classes participated in the Simon’s Story program and the Grades 6-8 classes took part in the Canadian Experience workshop.
The Grade 6 class was the most inquisitive today, particularly with regards to the Holocaust. The most common question from students in this grade was whether it was possible for Jewish people to pretend to not be Jewish to being able to escape the concentration camps. When Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) Educator Daniella asked one of the Grade 5 classes what they knew about Hitler, the answers included: “He’s ugly” and “He’s a really selfish, bad man.” Daniella always appreciates the innocent answers of younger students as they try to grapple with this difficult history. The organizing teacher for this visit commented that the workshops were so timely because it was important for students to understand how the past influences their lives and what they can do to combat intolerance.
It was also a busy media day as Tour for Humanity was visited by a reporter for Guelph Today who interviewed Daniella and took pictures of the students on the bus. Additionally, Tour for Humanity welcomed CTV News to do a piece on the program. CLICK HERE to watch the news report.
Tomorrow the Tour for Humanity and FSWC Educator Daniella returns to this same school for an additional 6 workshops which means by the end of tomorrow every student in Grades 4-8 will have participated in a Tour for Humanity workshop.
