Friends of Simon WiesenthalCenter (FSWC) is pleased to learn that, for the first time, the US voted againsta biased UN resolution on Israel’s presence in the Golan Heights.

In a statement released yesterday, the US Mission tothe UN stated that Ambassador Nikki Haley will be voting 'no' during today'svote on a resolution entitled "The Occupied Syrian Golan." This was afirst for the US, which has previously abstained from voting on this resolution.

“The United States will no longer abstain when the United Nations engages in its useless annual vote on the Golan Heights. If this resolution ever made sense, it surely does not today. The resolution is plainly biased against Israel. Further, the atrocities the Syrian regime continues to commit prove its lack of fitness to govern anyone. The destructive influence of the Iranian regime inside Syria presents major threats to international security. ISIS and other terrorist groups remain in Syria. And this resolution does nothing to bring any parties closer to a peace agreement. The United States will vote no,” said Ambassador Haley.

This resolutionwas one of nine resolutions against Israel that were voted on today by the UNGeneral Assembly committee. Canada voted ‘no’ to seven resolutions andabstained from two.

WhileFSWC commends Canada for joining the US in voting against seven of theresolutions, we continue to call on the government to vote against all biasedanti-Israel resolutions that may come forth in the future.
