Asian Heritage Month is observed every May in Canada. It is a time to celebrate and pay tribute to the vivid cultural heritage, history and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent. This month-long observance highlights the diverse communities that trace their roots to countries across East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The significance of Asian Heritage Month in Canada lies in both recognizing the longstanding history of Asian Canadians and the ongoing influence they have had on shaping the country.  Asian immigration to Canada dates back to the 19th century, with significant waves of immigrants arriving from China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and other nations. These communities have played pivotal roles in the development of Canada's economy, culture and social fabric.

Asian Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the diversity within Asian communities, each with its own distinct traditions, languages and customs. It also offers a chance to acknowledge the challenges faced by Asian Canadians, including systemic racism and discrimination, while highlighting their resilience, achievements and ongoing contributions to Canadian society.

In recognizing the significance of Asian Heritage Month, Canadians are reminded of the importance of inclusivity and the value of understanding the stories and experiences of all cultural groups in the nation. It is a time to foster greater appreciation of the vital role Asian Canadians play in helping make Canada a dynamic and diverse country.
