June 20, 2026 marks the 25th annual World Refugee Day, recognizing the strength, courage and perseverance of millions of people forced to flee conflict, persecution and violence.

World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, which — in response to the millions displaced during and after the Second World War — established the rights of refugees and the obligations of host countries toward them. Nearly 75 years on, the 1951 Convention remains the foundation framework for international refugee resettlement.

Today, more than 43 million people live as refugees, 40% of whom are children. Almost 70% come from just five countries (Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, Afghanistan and South Sudan). Most live in low- and middle-income nations. Yet refugees are more than just statistics — they are educators, workers, caregivers and leaders, seeking to contribute to and belong in safe, welcoming communities.

World Refugee Day calls attention to the challenges many face — racism, xenophobia, isolation — and reminds us of our responsibility to work to address these issues now and in the future. In Canada, iconic landmarks will be lit blue in solidarity with refugees here and abroad.

World Refugee Day reaffirms our global commitment to protect the rights and dignity of refugees everywhere. As we commemorate this milestone year, we remember that refugees are not forgotten, not alone and not without hope. We listen to their stories, advocate for their rights and seek solutions to the conflict and instability which drive them from their homes.
