Investigations Underway After Antisemitic Incidents Reported at North York Middle School

Investigations are underway after antisemitic incidents, including students depicting swastikas and performing a Nazi salute, were reported at a North York middle school. In a press release issued Tuesday, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) said it has been actively engaging with senior TDSB officials in response to the incidents.

On the heels of antisemitic incidents taking place at a North York school, a Toronto teacher has been put on home assignment after allegedly comparing COVID-19 vaccine mandates to the yellow Star of David that Jews were forced to wear as identifiers during the Holocaust.

FSWC Supports NDP Bill to Ban Hate Symbols in Canada

Last week, FSWC applauded NDP House Leader Peter Julian for tabling a bill to ban hate symbols in Canada. According to a statement from the NDP, the private member's bill, Bill C-229, would "prevent anyone from selling and displaying symbols that promote hatred," including swastikas and other Nazi symbols, KKK symbols and the Confederate flag, and symbols of slavery, racism and white supremacy.

Give Toronto Police More Resources to Battle 'Unprecedented' Spike in Hate Crimes, City Council Says

Toronto city councillors unanimously passed a motion asking the Toronto Police Services Board to consider "investing additional personnel, technology and other resources" into the TPS Hate Crime Unit.

2020 saw a sharp rise in hate-motivated incidents in Toronto, with the Jewish community remaining the most targeted, and the trend has continued. FSWC supports this motion to help ensure perpetrators of hate crimes are held accountable.
