FSWC Concerned Over Recent Injunction Forcing Hasidic Jews to Leave Residence

Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is concerned over an announcement that a group of Hasidic Jews in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec are being forced by a Superior Court injunction to leave their residence for allegedly using the residence as a place of worship. “In cases like this, a thorough investigation must be made into the complaints to ensure antisemitism has not played a role in seeking the residence to be vacated,” said FSWC president and CEO Avi Benlolo.

Today, FSWC brought its women's rights workshop to the University of Toronto where young girls are participating in the Achieve for Girls summer camp this week. Discussions revolved around gender inequality and stereotypes, unfair treatment of women around the world, and the importance of increasing tolerance and equality in Canada.

Neo-Nazi Receives Life Sentence Over String of Racist Killings

Neo-Nazi Beate Zschaepe was found guilty by a German court today over the killing of 10 people between 2000 and 2007, most of whom were Turkish migrants. Judges sentenced Zschaepe to life in prison for murder, membership of a terrorist organization, bomb attacks that injured dozens and several other crimes. Together with two men, she had formed the neo-Nazi group National Socialist Underground, and in late 1998 agreed to kill people “for antisemitic or other racist motivations.”

Israel to Launch Its First Spacecraft to the Moon in December

Israel will be launching its first spacecraft to the moon in December. It will take two months for the spacecraft to land on the moon, where it will then take photos and video of the landing while also measuring the moon’s magnetic field. Israel would become the fourth country to have landed on the moon – following the US, Russia and China. This will be the smallest spacecraft to land on the moon.

Jewish Groups in Germany Urging Government to Confront Antisemitism

In an open letter, nearly 40 Jewish organizations in Germany have called on the government to confront antisemitism following numerous antisemitic attacks in the country. The letter urges the government to adhere to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism and take the experiences of attack victims seriously, as well as recognize that “antisemitism cannot be successfully fought as a mere subcategory of racism.”

Israel Sees Record Number of Tourists in First Half of 2018

Israel experienced a record number of tourists this year between January and June, with about 2.1 million tourist entries recorded. This is a 19% increase from 2017 over the same period and 26% more than in 2016. Tourism has brought more than $3.3 billion into the Israeli economy since the beginning of the year.

Following the recent passage of legislation in Israel aimed at preventing money going to Palestinian terrorists, Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas declared that he would not stop paying salaries to terrorists and their families. He stated the PA would continue giving salaries to those who participated in terror attacks against Jews. 

In a recent speech, the deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated that the “Islamic army in Syria” is awaiting orders to eradicate Israel and that the Hezbollah terror group has 100,000 missiles aimed at Israel. Hossein Salami went on to praise Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 Iranian revolution, for making the destruction of Israel a goal of the regime.
