1. Recent Wave of Violent Attacks Against Israel Condemned by FSWC

Today FSWC condemned the recent surge in violent attacks against Israel - including Friday's horrifying stabbing attack that killed three Israelis, Sunday's rocket attacks from Gaza and stabbing of an Israeli in Jordan, and today's stabbing attack in a city near Tel Aviv. These attacks come after several days of clashes between Muslims and Israeli police following the installation of metal detectors at the Temple Mount.

2. FSWC Welcomes Educators for Holocaust Certificate Course

After a very successful end to our Genocide Educator Certificate Course last week, FSWC welcomed a new group of teachers for this week's four-day Holocaust Educator Certificate Course. This program investigates effective methods of integrating Holocaust education into the elementary and high school curriculum. Through lessons in pre-war Jewish life and the history of antisemitism, along with an intensive study of the rise of Nazism, teachers engage in thoughtful discussion using primary documentation and survivor testimony along with contemporary data and statistics to bring this history to life in their classroom.

Educators from the Durham, Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland Clarington Catholic, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic, Toronto and York Region District School Boards in Ontario and the Regina Catholic Schools Board in Saskatchewan have all joined the course this week. 

 

3. Israeli Security Cabinet Meets to Review Decision on Metal Detectors at Temple Mount

Israel's security cabinet met yesterday to review the decision that was made to install metal detectors at the Temple Mount. Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan stated that there is a possibility of the metal detectors being removed if an alternative security measure is found. One of the alternatives allegedly proposed by police is installing sophisticated cameras with facial recognition software.

4. Trump's Envoy Meets with US Ambassador, Netanyahu in Israel

According to news reports, US President Donald Trump's special envoy for international relations - Jason Greenblatt - arrived in Israel today to "support efforts to reduce tensions in the region" following recent violent incidents. Greenblatt is to closely coordinate with the National Security Council and Jared Kushner, who is charged with renewing Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

5. UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting to Discuss Situation in Israel

Following a request made by Sweden, France and Egypt on Saturday, members of the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting today to address the recent wave of violence in Israel. Talking to the press, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon stated that in order to deescalate the situation in Israel, the Security Council should demand the Palestinian Authority to stop promoting violence.

6. Israeli Court Rules PA Must Pay Damages for Torturing Palestinians

Last week a Jerusalem court ruled that the Palestinian Authority (PA) must pay damages to 51 Palestinians who were subjected to "unimaginable torture" by the PA while imprisoned from 1990 to 2003. In this landmark case, the court had reviewed plaintiffs' numerous allegations of physical and mental harm after being detained by the PA on suspicion of collaborating with Israel.

7. 45 Senators Sign Bill That Makes Boycotting Israel a Crime

Despite requests from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to reject legislation that would make boycotting Israel a crime, 45 US senators and 237 congressmen have made the decision to sign it. This bill would impose fines of up to $250,000 on US citizens who engage in interstate or foreign commerce while also supporting the boycott of Israel goods and services.

At least 29 people are dead and another 40injured following a car bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan Monday morning. TheTaliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes after the groupclaimed to have captured two districts in northern and central Afghanistan overthe weekend. 

Today Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with KingAbdullah of Jordan to discuss the crises at Temple Mount as well asthe recent attack that took place at the Israeli embassy in Jordan. In astatement, the royal family stated that the king had stressed that a"quick solution should be found and the reasons that caused the ongoingcrisis on the Temple Mount should be resolved."
