Political Leaders Urged to Join Premier in Denouncing Foodbenders' Antisemitism
Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center commends Ontario Premier Doug Ford for publicly speaking out against the antisemitic behaviour of Toronto company Foodbenders - which is continuing to defend its hateful messaging despite outcry from the Jewish community - and has urged other local politicians to join the public condemnation of the antisemitism promoted by the company.
FSWC also commends Uber for terminating its contract to deliver foods for Foodbenders, a development announced today on the company's Instagram page. FSWC has contacted DoorDash, another company that delivers for Foodbenders, asking it to join Uber in cutting all ties with the company.
FSWC Denounces Series of Hate-Filled Anti-Israel Protests in Canada
FSWC denounces a series of hate-filled anti-Israel protests that took place across Canada over the past week, including one in Mississauga where protesters were filmed chanting "Jews are our dogs." In response to the protest in Mississauga, FSWC reached out to Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie calling on the mayor to speak out publicly against the hate that was spewed at the protest and send a clear message that the city will not permit such antisemitism and other forms of hatred.
Simon Wiesenthal Center Asks EU to Focus on ISIS, Not Israel
Simon Wiesenthal Center sent a letter to the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell suggesting that the EU should stop its focus on Israel and instead turn its attention to a Turkish ratline that is allegedly bringing former ISIS volunteers who pose a possible threat back into Europe.
Kansas Newspaper Under Fire for Holocaust Comparison, Removes Facebook Post
A Kansas newspaper came under fire after it posted a cartoon comparing the state governor's face-covering order with the Holocaust on its Facebook page. The offensive image has since been removed and the owner of the newspaper has since apologized, stating the imagery "was deeply hurtful to members of a culture who've been dealt plenty of hurt throughout history."
Ex-Nazi Death Camp Guard Faces German Court Reckoning
In their closing arguments today in a Hamburg courtroom, prosecutors asked for a three-year prison term for the 93-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard accused of complicity in the murder of more than 5,000 people at the Stutthof camp during the Holocaust. According to the prosecutor, the former SS guard knew of the crimes committed in the camp, but choose to "look away."
Son Pays Poetic Tribute to Jewish Literary Giant Elie Wiesel on Anniversary of Death
The son of Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor and human rights advocate, paid a moving poetic tribute to his father on the fourth anniversary of his death. The poem recalled his father’s belief that one had to both speak up against injustice and oppression, but restrain the temptation to express hurtful sentiments.
