Anti-Israel Hate Spreads Across Ontario University Campuses
Over the last few days of ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza, we have seen a corresponding uptick in the demonization of Israel and Jews across Ontario university campuses. This has left Jewish students vulnerable to intimidation, harassment or worse and has emboldened “anti-Zionist” activists to escalate their hateful campaigns of misinformation.
Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) takes every incident seriously, diligently working with university officials to address cases of antisemitic propaganda, threats and intimidation targeting Jewish students.
Hate and Violence Targeting Jewish Community Witnessed Throughout Canada
A devastating by-product of the current crisis in Israel is the increase in intimidation, harassment and assault incidents targeting the Jewish community that are being reported across Canada. From Montreal to Vancouver, individuals have been posting harrowing experiences online of being confronted verbally or attacked physically for merely being a member of the Jewish community and defending Israel.
One-Sided Media Coverage Is Helping Fuel Antisemitism in Canada
"In recent days, I’ve been aghast, but not surprised, by the misinformation vilifying Israel as the sole aggressor in the conflict with Hamas. The media perpetuate this sadly familiar narrative that helps fan the flames of antisemitism in Canada and abroad," writes Michael Levitt, FSWC President and CEO, in his latest column in the Toronto Star. "Most abhorrent is its skewed reality devoid of context. Applying a misplaced moral equivalence to Hamas, a genocidal, terrorist proxy of the Iranian regime, and to Israel, a besieged democracy, imperfect as it might be, is nothing short of repugnant."
‘A Very Different Tone This Time’: Canadian Jewish Leaders Warn of Spike in Antisemitic Violence
Rocks were thrown at pro-Israeli demonstrators in Montreal and Jewish communities in western Canada are reporting roving vehicles seeking out “Jews.” Conflict in Gaza is always apt to stoke ill will against the Canadian Jewish diaspora, but ever since a new round of Hamas-fired rockets began streaking towards Israel in late April, Jewish leaders are reporting that antisemitic hatred has taken a particularly sinister turn.
Synagogue Opens at Nazi Massacre Site in Ukraine
On Friday, coinciding with Ukraine's first official Day of Remembrance for Ukrainians who saved Jews during the Second World War, Ukrainian officials opened a synagogue at Babyn Yar near Kyiv where nearly 34,000 Jews were murdered by Nazis in 1941.
Children of the Holocaust Who Are Anonymous No More
They appear for less than three seconds in the film footage, faces distorted through the window glass. Small cherubs, staring out confusedly at a chaotic scene on the railway platform. In a few moments, the train will roll out, and they will be on their way to a Nazi death camp.
Now two Dutch researchers, authors of a new book about the film, have identified two of the children behind the glass, along with at least 10 other individuals captured on film, providing a more detailed, personal view of lives ravaged by the Holocaust.
