Palestinian Leader Widely Condemned for Antisemitic Remarks

Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas has been widely criticized for antisemitic remarks he made in a recent speech, where he claimed hatred against Jews was not because of their religion, but because of their “social behaviour,” including money lending. Condemnations came from around the world, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC), the United Nations and the European Union. "Abbas' speech in Ramallah are the words of a classic anti-Semite," said SWC's Rabbi Marvin Hier and Rabbi Abraham Cooper.

From the Arab World

At least a dozen people were killed after a group of militants stormed the head offices of Libya’s electoral commission in Tripoli and set fire to the building. The attackers also opened fire on employees and engaged in a gun battle with security forces. The attack, which ISIL has claimed responsibility for, appeared aimed at derailing efforts to have elections in Libya this year, part of a UN-led attempt at unifying and stabilizing the country.

The Aqaba meetings – co-chaired by Jordan and Japan – ended on Sunday, bringing together Jordanian King Abdullah with senior military, security and political officials representing Southeast Asian countries, the UN, EU and NATO. The meetings reportedly focused on ways to continue efforts against global and regional terrorism.
