Toronto City Council Passes ‘Bubble Zone’ Bylaw to Limit Protests Around Vulnerable Institutions

Last week, following a 16-9 vote, Toronto City Council passed a "bubble zone" bylaw that will limit protests outside places of worship and other vulnerable institutions. The motion will create a 50-metre buffer around the spaces following an application from the property owner and would be in effect for a year, subject to renewal.

Israel Raises Alert for Travellers to Canada, Warning of ‘Increased Threat’

Israel's National Security Council issued a travel alert on Sunday, warning of "an increased threat by terrorists against Israelis and Jews in Canada." It came on the same day as demonstrators gathered in Toronto, Vancouver and other Canadian cities for the UJA's annual Walk with Israel event.

Police Seeking Man After String of Alleged Hate-Motivated Vandalism at Toronto Synagogues

Toronto police are investigating and have released images of a suspect after a series of hate-motivated vandalism incidents targeting synagogues along Bayview Ave. between Finch and Lawrence Ave. East. Most recently, three synagogues were defaced along with their front lawn signs.

'Troubling’ Antisemitic Slurs Directed at Jewish Elementary Students in Vancouver

Students from Vancouver Talmud Torah were subjected to antisemitic slurs earlier this month by children from a neighbouring public school, according to school officials. An email to families said a group of Grade 6 students was accosted during lunch hour in front of an Esso gas station near the South Cambie campus.

In Briefing to Minister, RCMP Warns of 488% Jump in Terrorism Charges

In a briefing to Canada's public safety minister, the RCMP wrote that the number of terrorism charges laid in Canada jumped 488 per cent between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024, with 25 suspects accused of 83 terrorism-related charges. Online platforms were "contributing to substantial youth engagement with violent extremist ideologies and an increase in the number of youth subjects of interest," the document said.

"What a horrible disservice to not see her for who she was and all she had done to further peace with courage and dignity," said Rabbi Doug Alpert, who presided over the funeral of Sarah Milgrim in Overland Park, Kansas on Tuesday. It took place more than five days after Milgrim and her boyfriend, Yaron Lischinsky, were shot to death outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.

University of Waterloo Professor Featured on Stamp for His Role in Cracking Nazi Code

The UK is commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with a new stamp series, honouring University of Waterloo professor Dr. William T. Tutte and nine other lesser-known heroes of the Second World War. Tutte worked at Bletchley Park, a legendary organization of code-breakers in the UK who cracked Nazi ciphers, and developed a statistical method to help decrypt Nazi messages in hours instead of weeks. He will be featured on a stamp in recognition of his work in the fight against Hitler's Nazis.
