Canada Changes Course, Votes in Favour of Anti-Israel UN Resolution

FSWC is disappointed in Canada’s decision to change its voting position on a UN resolution that implies Israel is exclusively responsible for the Palestinian people’s self-determination. During a General Assembly Third Committee session yesterday, Canada joined 163 other countries in voting in favour of a resolution titled “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.” Until yesterday, Canada has consistently voted against the resolution.

FSWC Condemns Antisemitic Protest at York U, Demands Admin Protects the Rights of Jewish Students

FSWC condemns the blatantly antisemitic efforts being made by anti-Israel student groups at York University to derail an event tonight organized by Jewish students which will feature talks by IDF reservists. FSWC demands that the university administration step in to ensure that Jewish students can exercise their rights to free speech without fear of harassment and intimidation.

Letter to UofT President Regarding UTGSU Response to Kosher Food Campaign Motion

In a letter to University of Toronto President Meric Gertler, FSWC president and CEO Avi Benlolo expressed concern after an executive member of the Graduate Students' Union stated the organization would be unlikely to support a motion to bring kosher food to campus on the basis that Hillel, which supports the effort, is “pro-Israel.”


"Conflating students’ concerns with having accessible kosher options on campus in any way with Israel or any group’s position on Israel is outrageous, unacceptable and blatantly antisemitic," Benlolo stated in the letter. "I ask you to take a determined approach to addressing the bigotry of the GSU – to issue a clear and unequivocal statement denouncing the actions of the union and launch a thorough investigation of antisemitism within its offices."

Jewish man stabbed repeatedly outside New York synagogue

FSWC condemns a recent stabbing attack on a Jewish man in New York. According to news reports, the man was walking to a synagogue for morning prayers yesterday when he was beaten and stabbed repeatedly. The perpetrator fled the scene and the victim is in critical condition.

Calgary City Council Proclaims Jan. 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Calgary City Council was applauded for its unanimous decision this week to proclaim January 27 as the city’s annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day. “This is a good start for the City of Calgary and will certainly not only help improve Holocaust education in the city, but also help in the fight against antisemitism," said FSWC's Avi Benlolo.

In pivot, US says it no longer regards Israel’s West Bank settlements as illegal

On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repudiated the State Department's 1978 opinion that held civilian settlements in the West Bank are "inconsistent with international law," stating that calling the civilian settlements illegal "hasn't advanced the cause of peace."

Israel says intercepts rockets fired from Syria

Israel's military reported that its missile defence system shot down four rockets fired from Syria toward Israel on Tuesday. "No hits on Israeli communities were identified," the army said.
