FSWC Monitoring Toronto Police Investigation into Antisemitic Assault Targeting Jewish Teens

According to a Toronto Police Service news release, four 17-year-old boys wearing religious attire were passing a group of young people at Fairholme Avenue and Bathurst Street before two of the boys were physically assaulted. The group of perpetrators also made derogatory comments about their religion and stole the glasses of one of the victims. FSWC confirmed with police today that the incident is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime.

Soldier Critically Hurt as More Than 300 Rockets, Shells from Gaza Pummel Southern Israel

More than 300 rockets, mortar shells and anti-tank missiles were launched from Gaza toward Israel today, seriously injuring at least one person and wounding several others. Around 60 rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defence system. The attack triggered sirens throughout southern Israel, sending hundreds of thousands of Israelis to bomb shelters. “It’s time for the world to stand with Israel in its fight against Hamas and the terrorism it continues to commit against innocent civilians,” said FSWC's Avi Benlolo in a statement.

Police Probe Swastikas Tracked in Snow at Thornhill and Aurora Parks

York Regional Police are investigating after swastikas drawn on snow were discovered in Aurora and Thornhill. The first incident took place in October at a playground in Aurora, while the second occurred on Friday at a community centre in Thornhill Woods. According to police, the two incidents are not related.

On average, over 10,000 Ontario students visit the Centre on an annual basis to take part in FSWC’s workshops, free of charge. Antisemitic Acts Up 69% in France in 2018

There was a 69% rise in antisemitic acts in the first nine months of 2018, said French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Friday on the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht. "Why recall, in 2018, such a painful memory? Because we are very far from being finished with antisemitism," he said. Antisemitic acts reportedly fell 58% in 2016 following a record high in 2015 and fell an additional 7% in 2017 - only to drastically increase in 2018.

Wisconsin School Investigated After Students Perform Nazi Salute for 'Junior Prom Photo'

A Wisconsin school is being investigated after a disturbing photo surfaced online of a group of male students performing a Nazi salute. In a letter to parents, the school district said the photo was taken last spring and called the students' actions "extremely inappropriate gestures."

NGO Rescinds Award to U.S. Women's March Due to Antisemitism

Germany-based Friedrich Ebert Foundation, a think tank for the German social democratic party, has withdrawn its Human Rights Award to the Women's March USA because of its antisemitism and support of the BDS movement. “An organization that may support feminism, but discriminates against Jews and Zionists and denies Israel’s right to exist should not be honored by a democratic foundation that advocates diversity and speaks out against discrimination,” members associated with the foundation wrote in a public letter.

National Policy Conference to Feature Leading Holocaust Education Researchers

On January 26-27, Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center will host its annual National Policy Conference on Holocaust Education, featuring leading Holocaust education researchers as well as educators. One of the key speakers will be Dr. Regina Gruter - a senior researcher at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
