Today, Tour for Humanity visited a secondary school in Belleville. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) last visited this school in 2014 and, strangely enough, it was also on Valentine's Day. FSWC Educator Elena taught 6 workshops throughout the day, most of the students participating in The Canadian Experience. The last group was a Grade 12 World Issues class so Elena also spoke about genocide from a global perspective to help students choose their own research topics for the end of the year. Students offered some insightful questions and comments throughout the day. One student brought up the battle of Stalingrad and was very passionate about World War II history. Another student wanted more info on the treatment of LGTBQ people under the Nazi regime. In another class Elena was surprised to learn that their teacher didn't know that slavery had been legalized in Canada so Elena spoke about the abolition movement and when the slave trade ended vs. when it was abolished completely.
