Greetings from the bustling metropolis of New Liskeard, Ontario (10,000people plus a generous moose population)! Today Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) travelled 20km south to the town of Cobalt (population 1,500 - a localsign called it “the most historic town in Ontario” - Cobalt was a former miningtown and still has a mining museum). That all being said, the students today were absolutely wonderful. FSWC Educator Daniella spent theday at a small school of 110 students fromKindergarten to Grade 8. Over 2 workshops (one Simon’s Story and one CanadianExperience) Daniella saw all of the school’s Grades 3-8 students.
In the afternoon, Tour for Humanity was visited by Grades 3-8 students from a Catholic elementary school in aneighbouring town for an additional 2 workshops. The school's principal was blown away by the bus and the material. She sat in on both of her school’s workshops and invited parents from theparent council to come sit in as well. She thanked Daniella profusely for coming tothe school, explaining to Daniella that many of these students had never been morethan 50km outside of their town so they weren’t exposed to things. Due to thesize of the community and it’s remote location, even a trip to North Bay is 2hours away and Timmins is over 3 hours. She loved the concept of the bus andhow it was able to reach smaller areas. The students themselves also really loved the bus, one girl stopped Daniella in thehallway after her workshop and again thanked her for speaking and told her thatshe learned a lot and that it would help her with a project she was doing.Another student stayed behind after a workshop and asked if Daniella was interested inhistory. When Daniella said she was, the student shared that he is very interested in World War Iand that he was hoping to one day go to university and study. Daniella encouraged himin the mean time to read and learn as much as he could. One last anecdote - at the end of the first Simon’s Story workshop one Grade 4boy said, “I’m really glad Hitler and the Nazis were stopped” - which Daniella thoughtwas quite appropriate
