Montreal (January 13, 2021) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is horrified and disgusted by the antisemitic vandalism attack that occurred at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim in Westmount, Quebec earlier today.

Swastikas were found spray-painted on the doors of the synagogue. The suspect, who had reportedly also brought a gasoline canister, was caught by a synagogue security guard, after which he was arrested by Montreal police.

"This horrid and vile attack on the Jewish community must be unequivocally denounced by all who believe there is no room for hatred in this country," said Michael Levitt, President and CEO of FSWC. "As the presence of online antisemitism and extremism increases, we continue to see that turning into real-life hate and violence. We are calling on community members to remain vigilant and government and law enforcement to take the necessary action to protect the Jewish community from such attacks."

FSWC commends synagogue security and Montreal police for ensuring the suspect was quickly apprehended, as well as has reached out to SPVM to urge for a thorough hate crime investigation and the synagogue to offer support.
