Toronto (December 2, 2019) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is actively investigating an incident of potential antisemitism following efforts by the McGill student council to remove a Jewish council member over her upcoming trip to Israel.

Over the weekend, a Jewish student at McGill University went public with her concerns that efforts by the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) to remove her as an active student council member are motivated by discrimination and antisemitism. Last week, the SSMU approved a motion calling the student’s upcoming trip to Israel a “conflict of interest” because it will be funded by Hillel Montreal, and stated that if the student did not agree to cancel her trip she would be removed from council.

The student says she is “appalled that McGill politics continues to exclude and discriminate against Jewish students,” vows to go on the Israel trip as planned, and says she will not resign from her position at SSMU.
