Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC) is deeply alarmed by the recent events in Myanmar. FSWC condemns in the strongest terms the recent actions taken by the Myanmar military, declaring a one-year state of emergency and the ongoing detention of members of the civilian government, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. These actions taken by the military are a direct attack on democracy and the rule of law and reflect a clear divergence from the will of the people of Myanmar who voted in November 2020 in a democratic election which received international praise.

FSWC calls for an immediate end to the Myanmar military’s obstruction of the country’s democratic process and for the unconditional release of all individuals detained in this matter. Myanmar’s democratically elected national assembly must be immediately restored and justice, democracy and the rule of law must prevail.
