Former prime minister Stephen Harper was a guest speaker on March 21 at a dinner in Toronto put on by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, a group dedicated to Holocaust education and battling anti-Semitism.
Mr. Harper addressed the organization at its dinner for top donors. During the event, Mr. Harper repeated his support for Israel, a position his Conservative government was adamant about while in office.
“We faithfully supported Israel’s right to defend itself from terrorist attacks,” Mr. Harper said in a video of the event, the link for which was distributed by the organization. “Canada was the first country in the world, outside of Israel, to suspend relations with the Hamas government in Gaza. We were also the most vocal nation in the world in speaking out against the extremist government of Iran, its genocidal threats against Israel, and we went as far, as you know, as closing down the Canadian Embassy in that country.”
On March 27, Mr. Harper spoke at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s policy conference in Washington, D.C. Before that, on March 16, he addressed a dinner in Calgary of B’Nai Brith Calgary, also a Jewish-based organization.
