Community Update

< Back to News Room

Yesterday’s announcement by the Toronto Police Service reflects a truth our community has long faced and understood. We are living in a changed, and much more dangerous, reality.

For many years, Toronto was a model of public safety and social harmony, anchored in cherished Canadian values and a welcoming approach to all who share them. That model is now under strain. And while the Jewish community may be among the first to feel the impact, we will not be the last.

In an intensified threat environment, the decision by Toronto Police to establish a dedicated counter-terrorism unit is a responsible and urgently needed move. Police services in cities like New York and London have taken similar initiatives, recognizing that prevention and preparedness are what ultimately save lives.

Recent events underscore why this action is necessary. In just the past few weeks, multiple synagogues in the Greater Toronto Area have been targeted by gunfire. At the same time, Jewish Canadians face sustained intimidation, harassment, and threats of violence. These are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader, alarming trend.

TPS's just announced Task Force Guardian, including the deployment of officers at synagogues and other Jewish community sites, will provide reassurance and serve as a clear deterrent to those who would seek to do harm. We acknowledge that this new reality is deeply unsettling. No one wants to see ordinary community life unfold under heavy security. As parents, as families, and as citizens, these are difficult and even painful adjustments but necessary.

Inaction is not an option when Canadian intelligence officials warn of the "realistic possibility" of an attack against Jewish Canadians within the next six months. We have seen in other cities the devastating consequences of failing to take strong, proactive measures. Acting now is essential to preventing such potential atrocities from happening here.

We also recognize that protecting Jewish institutions is not enough to address the full scope of this challenge. For more than two years, FSWC and many in our community have warned about the dangers of extremism and intimidation dressed up as "protest." The direction to now restrict demonstrations in largely Jewish neighbourhoods, including residential streets in the Bathurst and Sheppard area, is urgently needed to ensure public safety. All residents should be able to go about their daily lives without fear of harassment and intimidation.

These actions by Toronto Police Service are part of a redoubled focus on prevention, readiness, and community safety. Ongoing partnership between law enforcement and the Jewish community is central to our mission at FSWC. Through ongoing professional development, awareness, and engagement, we are committed to doing our part to ensure that these measures translate into real security, not only for the Jewish community but for our entire city.

That’s what our sobering, new reality calls for. And that what’s needed to ensure Toronto will be a safe and thriving home for us all.
