Toronto (March 3, 2020) – York University has agreed to Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center’s (FSWC) request to cancel an on-campus event scheduled for tomorrow featuring a speaker known for antisemitic and homophobic rhetoric.

York’s Muslim Student Association announced last weekend they would be bringing Ustadh Daniel Haqiqatjou to speak at the university this Wednesday as part of the group’s Islam Awareness Week. Over the past year, Haqiqatjou has claimed that “Zionists control every level of US government” and that pro-Israel Jews are the world’s biggest promoters of pornography and “same-sex behaviours.” He also called on Muslim countries around the world to adopt a policy of punishing gays and lesbians by stoning them to death.

FSWC reached out to President Rhonda Lenton demanding the administration step in and call off the event. Following a deliberation among administrators this afternoon, York informed FSWC that the event had been cancelled.
